YACHT REGISTRATION UNDER BVI FLAG

ELIGIBILITY
Citizens and/or Bodies corporate registered in the BVI are eligible to be owners of a yacht under flag of the British Virgin Islands. For the BVI yacht registration we'd suggest before to register your yacht in the IBC name, first to incorporate a BVI Business Company (BVI BC) with nominee directors for this purpose. If the vessel is owned by a non-British Virgin Islands entity, a local representative in the British Virgin Islands must be appointed.

PRE-REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE OF SURVEY / TONNAGE CERTIFICATE
The yacht must be surveyed and measured to obtain details of size, and other descriptive particulars necessary for the registration of British Ships under the Merchant Shipping Acts. This is carried out by a Surveyor of one of the approved Classification Societies, or a Surveyor appointed or authorized by the Registry. The Surveyor issues a Certificate of Survey and a Tonnage Certificate (British or International). To vessels under 24 m, in Load Line Length a simplified procedure is applicable whereby a combined Certificate of Survey/Tonnage Measurement is issued. The owner must ensure that the vessel is equipped in accordance with the Safety Matrix. The owner or master completes relevant parts the Safety Matrix and forwards a copy to the Registry.
 
The following seven Classification Societies are authorized by the VISR for undertaking statutory surveys on behalf of the British Virgin Islands:
•        American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
•        Bureau of Veritas (BV)
•        Det Norske Veritias (DNV)
•        Germanischer Lloyds (GL)
•        Lloyds Register of Shipping (LR)
•        ClassNK (NK)
•        Registro Italiano Navale (RINA
 
PROVISIONAL REGISTRATION OF PLEASURE YACHT IN BVI
The General Rule is there is no preliminary registration period. 
 
However, Provisional registration it is sometimes the case that the owner needs to move the vessel (once carved and marked) before it is fully registered. In such cases, the owner may apply for a Provisional Certificate of Registration which is valid for a period of up to three months before issuance of Permanent Certificate of Registry.
 
CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY 
On completion of the registration of a ship, the Registrar shall grant a certificate of registry comprising such particulars respecting the ship as are specified in the registration regulations.  
 
PORT OF REGISTRY
The name of the home port – “Road Harbour” – shall be prominently marked in the certificate of Registration of every yacht  registered under Flag of British Virgin Islands.
